With his birthday looming and life slowly turning to shit, Mark decides to throw a party and not only that, he’s going to get a date for the evening. And seeing as clubs, pubs, museums and all other forms of normal socialising are out his only option is to go speed dating.

In order to avoid spending time with Sophie, Mark gets a gym membership. Whilst there he discovers that Jez’s ex-wife Nancy is working at the same gym. Mark tells Jez about Nancy, whom then becomes desperate to get back together with her. He decides to take a job as a cleaner at the gym and sets about stopping her from dating Mark’s personal trainer Matt.

Mark is due to attend a business trip in Frankfurt, so Jez invites Big Suze to a drugs party at the flat, in the hope that he will seduce her. However, Mark is ill with gastric flu and decides to come home. Jez tries to convince him to go so he can have the party. However, Mark goes to bed, but discovers Super Hans in his bed with a girl. Super Hans panics when he is stuck in their toilet and kicks the door down. Mark fits a lock on his bedroom door and tries to get Jez to hire a carpenter to fix the bathroom door, but ends up doing it himself.

While spying on Sophie and Jeff, a TV news crew film Mark drinking beer at a picnic. However, the news report erroneously labels him as an alcoholic. A former alcoholic himself, Johnson forces Mark to join an alcoholics’ help group so he can still go to a business trip to Aberdeen with Sophie. Jez’s relationship with Nancy becomes celibate. He also becomes suspicious that Nancy is in a sexual relationship with a homeless man called “Nim”. After he is kicked out the flat by Mark, who is expecting a visit from his father, Nancy leaves Jez in anger for allowing Nim to leave. Johnson finds Mark drinking a beer and decides not to let him go on the business trip. Mark then attempts to get Jeff in trouble by bribing the security team to tape Jeff attacking him, but his plan backfires.

After Sophie turns down Mark’s offer of a date, Jez convinces him to go out to a party. Mark meets and strikes up a rapport with a teenage goth called Valerie. They, along with Jez and Toni, leave the party and go to a bowling alley. During their visit, Mark experiments with drugs and discovers that Sophie is out on a date with Jeff.
