The death of Jez’s Great Aunt has an unexpected Dead Gwen bonanza as not only does he stand to inherit twenty thousand pounds, the El Dude Brothers also discover an old pistol whilst they’re clearing out her house.

Whilst ‘Gunny’ brings immediate war gun satisfaction to Mark and Jez, the cash proves harder to get hold of after Jeremy’s mum turns up with Martin her current boyfriend and some bad news; due to tax and probate there’s only twenty grand in total, and most of that is going on a holiday investment in Corfu.

Mark doubts over his proposal of marriage to Sophie continue whilst he and Jez visit Sophie’s parents for her birthday. Jez realises he was only brought along to keep Sophie’s annoying brother Jamie company. Later, Jez has an affair with Sophie’s mother and Mark accidently lets Sophie’s father, Ian, hear of her lack of love for Sophie. Ian makes Mark promise to cancel the wedding, and then takes his revenge on another man whom his wife has an affair with, by all three of them burning down a barn.

Jez decides he wishes to discontinue his relationship with his new girlfriend Michell. She convinces him to stay with her by offering him a form sexual exploration; commencing with a threesome. Mark gets mugged on the way home, although in reality two youths just convinced him to hand over his possessions then told him to run away. Jez explains how he plans to get back together with Big Suze and plans not to tell her about Michelle. When Big Suze arrives, she has a new boyfriend, a muscular ex-monk called Stu. Mark begins carrying a knife to protect himself from being mugged again, although he does not want Sophie to know about it. Mark confronts his muggers again and gets revenge, but at the same time reveals his knife to Sophie’s horror.

Mark agrees to go to a dancing class (”Rainbow rhythms”) with Sophie, taking Jez along also. Jez meets Nancy, an American Christian whom he begins to fall in love with. The two develop a taboo-breaking sexual relationship, although he considers being made to black-up too offensve. Mark reads Sophie’s email to get a better insight into her feelings about him. Mark, Sophie, Jeremy and Nancy go to dance class member Gwyn’s house in the country which invovles a game of spin the bottle where Mark and Jez kissing each other. Sophie finds out to her anger that Mark has been spying on her email.

Mark gets into trouble; with his love Sophie as she sits on his hand, with Jez after laughing at his musical work and with some children who are bullying him. Mark and Jez are invited to their a party by their neighbour Toni. Mark tries to impress her while Jez attempts to attract Toni’s sister, whom Mark incorrectly tells him has cancer. After the party, Mark begins to realise that Sophie is more like his type of woman.
