Mark doubts over his proposal of marriage to Sophie continue whilst he and Jez visit Sophie’s parents for her birthday. Jez realises he was only brought along to keep Sophie’s annoying brother Jamie company. Later, Jez has an affair with Sophie’s mother and Mark accidently lets Sophie’s father, Ian, hear of her lack of love for Sophie. Ian makes Mark promise to cancel the wedding, and then takes his revenge on another man whom his wife has an affair with, by all three of them burning down a barn.

Mark decides to take Sophie on a weekend break in the South West, using his Sunday Times hotel mega deal vouchers. There, he intends to propose marriage to her; hence resolving their growing differences. Jez tags along, initially on the condition that he takes Big Suze, but he ends up taking Super Hans, who is attempting to go “cold turkey”. Mark begins to suspect that he does not love Sophie and plans not to propose. After Sophie thinks that she has got lost, Mark and Jez set out to rescue her, only to end up getting lost in the Quantock Hills themselves. Upon returning, Mark discovers that Sophie has found her engagement ring, forcing Mark to become engaged even though he does not love her.

Jez is called for jury service, which results in him meeting and then romancing the defendant, Carla, to Mark’s anger. Sophie has been slacking at work and comes to visit Mark in the hope to avoiding more work. However, Johnson wants Mark to discipline her, leaving him in a dilemma. Sophie’s increasing liberal streak begins to annoy Mark, especially he, Sophie, Jez and Carla go to a gay club.

Mark’s sister Sarah has broken up with her husband and comes to visit; wishing to talk extensively about family issues with Mark and “getting it all out”. Jez implies that he agrees with this attitude. However, Jez ends up sleeping with Sarah, much to Mark’s annoyance. Jez says that he is in love with Sarah, but Mark does not believe him. While Jez continues to fall in love with Sarah, Mark develops feelings for Big Suze, resulting in his friendship with Jez almost breaking. Jez is then put off by Sarah, coming to the conclusion that he is practically in love with Mark. Mark and Jez’s friendship returns to normal at the cost his friendship for Sarah.

Mark is due to attend a business trip in Frankfurt, so Jez invites Big Suze to a drugs party at the flat, in the hope that he will seduce her. However, Mark is ill with gastric flu and decides to come home. Jez tries to convince him to go so he can have the party. However, Mark goes to bed, but discovers Super Hans in his bed with a girl. Super Hans panics when he is stuck in their toilet and kicks the door down. Mark fits a lock on his bedroom door and tries to get Jez to hire a carpenter to fix the bathroom door, but ends up doing it himself.

Mark and Jez’s old Canadian University friend, Merry, comes to England and asks Jez and Super Hans to help her move some possessions into a new flat. It is revealed that she owns the pub under the flat, possibly as a result of the recent death of her mother, and gets Jez and Super Hans to manage it. However, Super Hans is “very particular about the kind of establishment” he wants to manage and is determined to put make some kind of anarchist or anti-corporate statement with the pub. Amongst his plans, Sper Hans wants to name it “Free The Paedos”, and wants to leave it in a state of unkempt disarray, with a washing machine in the middle of the floor.

Jez decides he wishes to discontinue his relationship with his new girlfriend Michell. She convinces him to stay with her by offering him a form sexual exploration; commencing with a threesome. Mark gets mugged on the way home, although in reality two youths just convinced him to hand over his possessions then told him to run away. Jez explains how he plans to get back together with Big Suze and plans not to tell her about Michelle. When Big Suze arrives, she has a new boyfriend, a muscular ex-monk called Stu. Mark begins carrying a knife to protect himself from being mugged again, although he does not want Sophie to know about it. Mark confronts his muggers again and gets revenge, but at the same time reveals his knife to Sophie’s horror.

Nancy asks Jez to marry her for visa reasons, to which he agrees with gusto. However, Toni attempts to seduce Jez. Sophie and Mark’s friendship is rekindled after meeting for lunch. Jez and Nancy marry, although Nancy leaves the party early for a job interview. Later, Toni succeeds in having an affair with Jez. Mark stands up to Jeff, resulting in the realtionship between Sophie and Jeff ending. Jez, due to “stupid honesty”, tells Nancy about his affair with Toni, securing the status of the relationship as “nothing more than a husk”.

Sophie tells Mark that Jeff does not want them seeing each other any more, so Mark attempts to make friends with Jeff with Jez’s help. Mark arranges a sponsored bungee jump with Sophie while Jez becomes friends with Jeff. The jump fails to got to plan due to Mark’s cowardice and he resorts to self-harm to try to make Sophie love him. Mark then pretends to be gay in front of Jeff, hoping he will let him see Sophie. However, Jeff reveals that he never said that Mark and Sophie should stop seeing each other. Mark finds out that Jeff cheated on Sophie and uses the knowledge to sabotage their relationship.

Mark meets a student called April in a shoe shop and decides to return to see her again, but discovers that she has gone to university in Dartmouth. Jez goes to play a gig in the same city and so Mark goes along on the pretext of wanting to see the band. He meets April at University and joins her class, pretending he is a student. Jez is offered the frontman spot of the band for the gig after Super Hans makes a scene, but Mark and Jez get locked in the back room of a corner shop when Jez tries to steal a chocolate bar. They break out (with Mark leaving “a tenner and a note” for the shopkeeper) but Jez is late for the gig. Mark attends a party at a professor’s house but Jez shows up after the gig. Mark ends up going back to April’s room, but fails to make love with her. Mark and Jez go home the next day disappointed.
