Jez’s Uncle Ray dies in a hospice. Mark goes to the funeral with him, inviting Sophie also in an unusual sort of date. Jez learns that the illness his uncle died of may be hereditary and as a result he becomes fearful that he might die also. Mark and Sophie go for a weekend away in the countryside, with Jez unwillingly coming alone. Before Mark has the chance to make love to Sophie, he discovers that Jez has taken a drug overdose. Mark calls an ambulance and Jez;s life is saved. He later visits Toni and lies to her about dying of his uncle’s condition so that they can have sex.

Mark is angry after he is passed over for a promotion which is given instead to Sophie. His anger leaves Mark needing therapy. Jez tries to impress Toni with his new job at the music company where Super Hans works. However, his plan backfires, with Toni and Super Hans getting together. Jez and Mark decide to take revenge on Sophie, Toni and Super Hans. Again, things fail to go according to plan, with Mark being shot with an air gun and Jez being pepper sprayed.

Mark becomes infatuated with charismatic loan manager Alan Johnson. His “love” for him leads Mark to question his own sexuality. Jez tries to remember “the bad thing” that he did while on a drug binge with Super Hans, while also trying to break-up Mark’s friendship with Johnson. Jez manages to do so, but also remembers what “the bad thing” was - oral sex with Super Hans.

After Sophie turns down Mark’s offer of a date, Jez convinces him to go out to a party. Mark meets and strikes up a rapport with a teenage goth called Valerie. They, along with Jez and Toni, leave the party and go to a bowling alley. During their visit, Mark experiments with drugs and discovers that Sophie is out on a date with Jeff.

Tired of paying Jez’s rent, Mark decides to get him a job at his place of work, JLB Credit. Mark tries to express his love for Sophie by leaving her embarrassing cartoons and phone calls. Intent on becoming a musician, Jez tries to come across as an “Unemployable freak” at the interview, and manages to avoid getting the job. Mark discovers that his phone call to Sophie is common knowledge when his rival Jeff mocks him in the lift.

Mark gets into trouble; with his love Sophie as she sits on his hand, with Jez after laughing at his musical work and with some children who are bullying him. Mark and Jez are invited to their a party by their neighbour Toni. Mark tries to impress her while Jez attempts to attract Toni’s sister, whom Mark incorrectly tells him has cancer. After the party, Mark begins to realise that Sophie is more like his type of woman.
